Downtown New Port Richey continues to gain regional recognition for its growing business community! The latest example? A cover story in Land O’ Lakes magazine, spotlighting downtown NPR’s growing self-care sector! The article (page 6) highlights award-winning businesses Maharajh Acupuncture & Herb Shoppe and the Downtown Hair Lounge, in addition to the recently opened United Hands Wellness Center.
All told, downtown New Port Richey has dozens of businesses that fall under the theme of self-care!
In the Self-Care spotlight
United Hands Wellness Center
In July 2020, Jay and Devon took a huge leap of faith. They left behind their established massage therapy practice in Dunedin to open their dream facility in downtown New Port Richey, and on August 29, 2020, United Hands Wellness Center was manifested. Their goal is to practice wellness in the most holistic sense. As experience massage therapists, Jay and Devon were already delivering on the physical approach to wellness. However, they knew that for their practice to reach its potential, they would have to tie in mental and spiritual wellness too.
Now, just over two months into their venture, Jay and Devon have added a licensed counselor, yogi, medical cannabis consultant, and an office manager to their practice. What makes their practice successful is the complementary backgrounds that each brings to the business – Jay, with years of experience in sales and management, and Devon, with 12 years in massage therapy and a side gig as the USF Women’s Basketball Team’s massage therapist, bring together two diverse perspectives that make United Hands Wellness Center one-of-a-kind.

Downtown Hair Lounge
Amber Kelly has been cutting hair professionally for more than a decade, but after years of working at cookie-cutter corporate barber shops, she decided that she needed a space that has as much personality as she does. She opened the Downtown Hair Lounge on May 28th, 2020, and was immediately inundated with post-lockdown haircut reservations. Her one-woman shop wouldn’t stay that way for long – Christa Hood joined the shop as the de facto nail artist in June 2020, specializing in hand-drawn nail art and full-set extensions. Court Dover became the shop’s specialty hair colorist a short time later, and quickly became known for her ability to do high-quality vivid hair colors.
It didn’t take long for word about Amber’s shop to reach the barbering community – customers were leaving satisfied, especially once she partnered with local craft beer bar, Ordinance One, to offer customers a free beer with every service. Soon, she filled out her shop with two additional stations to accommodate a rotation of highly-skilled barbers. The success of the Downtown Hair Lounge began in New Port Richey, but it was recognized regionally when Amber Kelly and Christa Hood won Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay awards for “Best Hair Stylist,” and “Best Mani/Pedi” respectively.

Maharajh Acupuncture & Herb Shoppe
Maharajh Acupuncture and Herb Shoppe has been a part of downtown NPR for more than a decade, helmed by Dr. Lisa Maharajh D.O.M., Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Lisa graduated from East West College of Natural Medicine in Sarasota in 2007 after 7 years of training. She prides herself in the compassion she gives to each and every patient. She has been practicing Chinese Medicine for over 7 years and continues to study new techniques and methods of testing and treatment. Dr. Lisa is a member of the non-profit organization Foundation for Wellness Professionals and focuses on community education with free lectures and health screenings. She has also joined the American Academy for Anti-Aging and strives to help her patients understand the importance of hormone balancing and stress reduction.
Dr. Lisa offers No-Charge consultations as a way for the community to come in to the office without financial barriers to see if what she does can help them. Maharajh’s purpose is to help as many people as possible regain and maintain their health through education, prevention, and wellness. They focus on the whole body and search to find the cause of the health concern with testing, detoxing, hormone balancing and Acupuncture and Injection Therapy. They help many health concerns including, but not limited to, non-invasive facial rejuvenation, testing and balancing hormones, pain, digestive disturbance, neuropathy, weight issues, adrenal fatigue, stress, infertility, women’s health, and more.
